Healthy aging is about having a great quality of life. There are several components to this - maintaining a healthy diet, enjoying a robust social life and keeping brains engaged are crucial to healthy aging.
Mobility is at the centre of healthy aging. Several aspects of health affect mobility including vision loss, chronic disease such as COPD or Parkinson’s Disease, muscle weakness and cognitive decline.
While no one wants to fall, here are some important things to know:
one in five falls results in a serious injury such as a broken bone or head injury
more than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling
falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries
Two of the leading risk factors of falls are imbalance and difficulty with walking, both of which can be mitigated or improved with exercise. Loss of strength, decreased range of motion of joints (such as shoulders, hips and knees) and impaired balance are all aspects of mobility that can be addressed.
Common goals include:
Falls prevention and improving balance
General conditioning and strengthening
Being able to continue with favourite activities such as pickleball, lawn bowling and curling
